TEN THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT NEUROMAS
TEN THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT NEUROMAS
1) Weight bearing on the area causes pain, so try metatarsal pads
2) Ice pack the bottom of the foot for ten minutes 2-3 times per day
3) Avoid barefoot walking until the symptoms resolve, try to stay in sneakers
4) Tight or poorly fitting shoes cause pain via nerve entrapment, so wear what seems to be the most comfortable
5) Consider other causes of nerve pain like sciatica or low back problems
6) If padding doesn't help, consider Power Step insoles or Custom Foot Orthoses
7) Injections are often helpful, the standard now being alcohol sclerosing injections which shrink neuroma tissue
8) Consider physical therapy; also consider neural flossing several times per day for mobilization of the tissues and to free up the nerve
9) Luckily, less than 10% of patients need to consider surgery to remove the nerve:
10) Remember, nerve pain makes nerve pain by itself; to keep the cycle of nerve pain from spiraling out of control treat neuromas aggressively
